A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth- to cover the tooth and restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance. When cemented into place crowns fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.
Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge is made up of two or more crowns on either side of the tooth/teeth being replaced. These are called retainer crowns. The teeth being replaced are call pontic-crowns. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants and are a great option for replacing missing teeth using a fixed (non-removable) prosthetic.
There are multiple types of crowns/bridges including porcelain, porcelain fused to metal/gold/high noble metal, and full metal/gold crowns. At Infinity Dental we often fabricate crowns using Zirconia Porcelain. Dr. Sanchez in most cases suggests the Zirconia as it is strong as well as one of the best option for aesthetics. There is no need to sacrifice aesthetics for strength, and vice-versa.
Crowns/Bridges generally require a total of two visits. On the first visit the teeth are prepped for the crowns (if a bridge is being required and you require an extraction it will be done at this visit as well). After the teeth have been prepped an impression is taken which will be used to send to the lab for fabrication of the permanent crown.
A temporary acrylic crown/bridge is made during this visit that will be temporarily cemented. This will be worn until you return for the permanent crown. You will also chose the shade at this visit as well as discuss any other concerns in regards to the look/shape/shade of the permanent crown. The final (permanent) crown/bridge is made to match the look and shade of your natural teeth.
During the second visit the temporary crown/bridge is removed, and the permanent crown is tried on. You will be given the opportunity before the crown is cemented to ensure you approve of the look, shape, shade, and feel of the crown/bridge. Once you have approve the permanent crown it is delivered using permanent cement, cleaned up, and polished to ensure natural comfort and bite.
You can help to ensure the longevity of your permanent restorations by maintaining proper oral hygiene as well as regular dental check-ups and cleanings.
Infinity Dental is committed to providing a caring approach to patient treatment.
